Updating a package for my own use

Postby hotmule on Thu Nov 01, 2007 9:54 pm

Hey,

I need to update our version of perl on Linx (RedHat). I've tried to use the rpm program that comes with the OS, but all I can get it to do is tell me about the version we already have installed.

Is it possible for me to update this package some other way?

Thanks,

Mule

Hey There,

Unfortunately, unless you have elevated permissions for your user account, or belong to a group with elevated permissions, you won't be able to update rpm packages on RedHat. Mainly because you can't modify the rpm database and/or the files and/or directories that you'd need to update to do this.

You'll have to ask your sysadmin to update the package for you. Basically if you get an error like "can't access the rpm database" when you run "rpm -i packagename" Redhat just isn't going to allow you to modify it. It's basic security so that users can't modify the filesystem, which would affect all users of the OS
